Orientation

Orientation: My First Steps in Agua Prieta
I still remember the mix of excitement and anxiety I felt as I stepped off the bus in Agua Prieta. This was the beginning of a year-long adventure as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV), and orientation was the first step towards understanding that.
From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in the rich culture of Agua Prieta. We learned about the city’s history, traditions, and the unique challenges faced by its residents. It was fascinating to hear stories of life on the border and to experience the vibrant energy of the community.
One of the highlights of orientation was meeting the other YAVs. We quickly formed a bond, sharing our hopes, fears, and expectations for the year ahead. It was comforting to know that I wouldn’t be alone on this journey.
We also had the opportunity to meet members of the local community. These interactions helped me to feel more connected to the people of Agua Prieta and to understand their perspectives. It was inspiring to see the passion and dedication of the people working to make a positive difference in their community.
As orientation progressed, we learned more about our specific roles as YAVs. We were assigned to various projects and initiatives, and we were given a clear understanding of the expectations and responsibilities associated with our service. It was exciting to know that I would be able to contribute to meaningful work and make a tangible impact.
In addition to the cultural and professional aspects of orientation, we also had opportunities for spiritual growth. We engaged in prayer, meditation, and group discussions about our faith journeys. These experiences helped me to connect with my own spirituality and to explore the intersection of faith and service.
Orientation was a transformative experience that laid the foundation for my year as a YAV in New Orleans. I am grateful for the friendships I formed, the knowledge I gained, and the spiritual insights I discovered. As I look ahead to the year ahead, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the adventures that await me.
